d’Art’s new exhibition goes beyond scratching the surface

by | Jun 1, 2022

Take a break from the smoldering heat and get lost in the world of textures and patterns this Saturday at d’Art Center’s latest exhibition, Surface. The national juried exhibition will feature 64 pieces of artwork by 60 artists carefully curated by gallery manager Amanda Bradley and associate artist Jorge A. Saenz. The competition is free game for artists of all mediums and styles, so visitors can expect to see a diverse range of artwork. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, will be on display for the remaining dates of May until June 25th at d’Art Center located in the NEON District on 740 Boush Street.

Besides the opening date, there are two special dates you should be aware of if you’re interested in the exhibition. First, there will be a celebratory reception complete with snacks, beverages, and awards on Friday, June 3rd, from 5:30-7:30 PM. The reception is free and open to the public! The following weekend, d’Art associate artist and Surface curator Jorge A. Saenz will host his own “Artist Talk” on Saturday, June 11th, from 2-3 PM. While the event is free, RSVPs are required. RSVP here!

Growing up close to the legendary counterculture Mecca, Haight-Ashbury, it was only a matter of time that Saenz discovered the world of art, specifically painting. He would establish his own signature universe of textures and patterns, interweaving his inspiration from pivotal artists (e.g., Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, and Helen Frankenthaler) and social causes. Today, the Virginia Beach-based artist’s work has been featured in galleries throughout Virginia Beach (e.g., the MOCA, Charles H. Taylor Visual Arts Center, Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, and Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library, and the Virginia Beach Art Center’s Brock Gallery), Norfolk (e.g., d’Art Center), and Brooklyn, New York (e.g., 440 Gallery). Saez is also an award-winning artist, receiving accolades for “Best in Show” and “Most Creative” awards at the Brock Gallery. Guests attending the Artist Talk will learn more about Saenz, his work, processes, influences, and insight into how he selected artists for the curated Surface exhibition.
