Unveiling the Heart’s Secrets: Dive into Claudia Bueno’s Immersive Exhibition at The Hermitage Museum & Gardens

by | Jun 1, 2023

A massive transformation is underway at Norfolk’s quaint and (usually) quiet Hermitage Museum & Gardens, nestled behind the Lochhaven neighborhood.

Internationally recognized artist Claudia Bueno is set to kick off a three-month solo exhibition of incredible magnitude. Titled “Echoes of the Heart,” this immersive showcase will captivate visitors with its grand scale installations, both indoors and outdoors, bringing to life Bueno’s profound exploration of the natural world and the delicate nature of the human heart.

Born in Venezuela, Bueno has gained worldwide acclaim for her ability to create interactive worlds that evoke deep emotions and provide boundless space for introspection. Her works have graced venues at the height of creative culture, including Meow Wolf Las Vegas, where her installations have enthralled countless visitors. Now, Bueno brings her artistic prowess and captivating vision to The Hermitage Museum & Gardens, promising a truly unparalleled experience.

Curator of Contemporary Art Exhibitions and Education at the Hermitage, Carrie Spencer, describes Bueno’s work as visually stunning, multi-layered, and profound. She instantly recognized the synergy between the artist’s creations and the museum’s space, stating, “Claudia’s work is an exploration of materials, concepts, and content.” Spencer eagerly anticipates the exhibition’s debut, as it promises to create a fully immersive world that intertwines light, sound, and sculpture within multiple areas of the museum.

“Echoes of the Heart” is an intricate and interactive installation, which Bueno has dedicated to different facets of the human experience. The artist’s collaborative soundscape with Brazilian-born healer and musician, Poranguí, will provide a captivating auditory backdrop that further amplifies the emotional journey visitors will embark upon. Bueno’s transformative spaces promote a sense of togetherness and belonging, encouraging guests to delve deep within their own hearts, spirits, or physical forms.

To commemorate the unveiling of this extraordinary exhibition, The Hermitage Museum & Gardens will host an Opening Celebration on Friday, June 9. This event will grant attendees the opportunity to meet Claudia Bueno in person while being entertained by performances from talented artists such as From Overseas, Steven Kemner, and Ballet Virginia. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres by Chef by Design and a full bar offering beverages for purchase will enhance the evening’s festivities. Get Tickets Here.

Recognizing the importance of mental and physical well-being, the exhibition will also feature special experiences for guests. They can partake in a sound bathing session with Michael Weber, CMT, owner of FLOW Massage & Bodywork, and indulge in energetic cleansing with Carol Peterson, owner of The Crystal Sunflower. These activities align with Bueno’s emphasis on holistic wellness and will enrich the overall immersive encounter.

If you can’t make it on Thursday the 9th (it will probably be sold out), there are still plenty of Echoes of the Heart events to attend. Most Tuesdays through October, you’ll get the chance to experience Echoes of the Heart at night, when the Hermitage opens late 7:30 pm – 10:30 pm.

On Saturday July 29th, the Hermitage will host Performing ART: Echoes of the Heart with seven live performances inspired by the installation, including acting, dancing, singing, storytelling, and more. The three-month exhibition will also include artist workshops, artist talks, and a family festival. Check out all of the Echoes of the Heart events here.
